Can I Reactivate an Asset That Was Disposed Of?

Learn why a disposed asset cannot be made active again and what your options are

What Is the Problem?

You have an asset that was marked as disposed. Now you need it active again. Maybe the asset was repurposed or is still in use. But you cannot find a way to change the status back to active.

This is not a permissions issue. It is a system limitation.

Why Can't I Reactivate It?

When an asset is disposed of through a disposal form, two things happen:

  • The asset is marked as inactive in the system
  • A general ledger posting is recorded to reflect the disposal

That GL posting is an accounting transaction. It is already recorded in your books. Because of this, the system cannot simply reverse the status. Reactivating the asset would conflict with that posted entry.

What Are My Options?

If the asset is still in use and needs to be tracked, you will need to create a new asset record for it.

Creating a new record allows you to:

  • Track the asset going forward
  • Set it up for depreciation
  • Assign it the correct fund, department, and account information

Your Client Support team can help guide you through this process.

What to Do Next

If you believe the asset was disposed of in error, or if you have questions about how to handle the accounting, contact your finance or accounting team before making any changes. A correction of this nature may require a journal entry.

Do not attempt to create a new asset record without first confirming the correct accounting treatment with your team.
